One of the largest theme parks on the island of Kyushu, Mitsui Greenland dominates the small city of Arao an hour’s drive north of Kumamoto.
Here’s what the experts from Theme Park Review have to say about it:
Mitsui Greenland offers something for just about everybody on one big piece of sprawling, sun-baked real estate (shade is nonexistent). This might be Japan’s best “traditional” park, with nine coasters (including an excellent stand-up model); a few walkthroughs (the “Haunted Hospital” stands out here); three dark rides (including the strangest “simulator” anywhere); an alpine slide; and some welcome water rides. Be sure not to miss the “chair lift of death”–something you’d never see in an American park.
Mitsui Greenland is part of the huge Greenland resort consisting of the amusement park, two hotels, a hot spring, bowling arcade, restaurants, shops and a 36 hole golf course. It atracts around 3 million visitors a year.
Entrance to the park is 1,400 yen for adults and a further 3,800 yen for a ride pass.
For children under 120 cm height entrance is 700 Yen and 2,500 Yen for a ride pass.
For children over 120 cm in height up to the age of 15 entrance is 700 Yen and the ride pass costs 3,600 Yen
For senior citizens entrance is 700 yen and the ride pass is a bargain 2,500 Yen.
Greenland is open every day from 09:00 to 17:00.
In the summer there is also a large waterpark to enjoy.
