Kuju Mountains くじゅう連山

Kuju

The Kuju Mountain Range is located a short drive up and over Aso‘s northern caldera wall  just over the border into Oita prefecture. Kuju boasts the highest peaks on the mainland of Kyushu, the highest Mt. Nakadake reaching 1791 m. In 1934 the Aso – Kuju National Park was created, an area of unique volcanic landscapes, the largest grasslands in the country and unparalelled panoramic views. The Kuju mountains are a favourite of Japanese hikers attracting many visitors all year round. Due to the volcanic activity there is a plentiful supply of underground hot springs and here you will find some of the best onsens in the country.

Below are activities and sights you can explore in and around the Kuju area. Click on the picture links to find out more. Explore Kumamoto runs an Aso and Kuju Sights tour which we are happy to customise with any of the sights below, contact Explore Kumamoto with your inquiry.
