About Kawashiri Town

During the Edo period, shipping and sea trade thrived and Kawashiri Town became Kumamoto City’s bustling riverside port. Local artisans moved into the area making everything from knives to sake to sweets. These days the Kawashiri area is more of a peaceful backwater but there is still evidence of its heyday with a variety of traditional buildings lining the streets and traditional crafts being made in the area.

After visiting Tenmeido why not take a walk around the area. make sure to visit the nearby Kumamoto Handicrafts Promotion Center. There you can see exhibitions by local artisans. There are a selection of traditional crafts for sale and also often live craft demonstrations and craft making workshops you can join. The Kumamoto Handicrafts Promotion Center is open from 9:00 to 17:00, closed on Mondays.
