These are all sites I use, some are not the easiest to find as they might not pop up on the first page of any google search, or can only be found if you search in Japanese.  I put the list together with a brief introduction to each site hoping it might be a useful resource for anyone living in the area or planning their trip to Kumamoto or northern Kyushu.

Minami Aso Tourism Organisation

Find out what you can eat, see and do do in beautiful Minami Aso; the southern side of the Aso caldera. Also find information about bicycle rental for all ages.


Amakusa Treasure Island

The Amakusa Tourism Organisation website covers all the Amakusa islands, with detailed information about sightseeing, food, events, getting around and the history of each area.


Aso Michi No Eki

The Aso Road Station website offers lots of information about the Aso area, particularly the northern side of the caldera. It also has a blog in French and English introducing many of the activities and places you can enjoy in the area.


Kuma Visit

A great site for anyone visiting Kumamoto offering lots of useful travel advice including an events calendar. Also introduces English friendly restaurants including vegetarian and halal ones.


Article: Summertime swimming in Kyushu

Summer in Kumamoto can be ridiculously hot, this article could save your life and sanity introducing you to all the best swimming spots around.


Aso Global Geopark

The Aso area is a UNESCO Global Geopark, find out about the many Geosites you can see in the Aso area and learn about the volcanic activity that has created them.


Kyushu Olle Walking Paths

The Kyushu Olle are a series of walking paths through the countryside of Kyushu. The idea comes from the Korean island of Jeju. The start and finish point of all the courses can be reached by public transport. The courses are also graded in difficulty some are proper hikes and others offer more gentle walks taking in the local sights of the area.


Mount Aso RKK Web camera live feed

Before heading to Mount Aso, it’s always a good idea to check the weather, this site has a live feed to the webcam on top of Mount Aso so you can check the visibility and see what the volcano is up to. Don’t be surprised if you see nothing, Mount Aso is notoriously foggy!


Takachiho Tourism Organisation

If you’re heading to the beautiful Takachiho Gorge, use this site to check if boating is on and also pre-book your boat too. (Advisable if you’re visiting on a weekend or public holiday.)


Kumamoto Castle

The official website of Kumamoto Castle with background information of the castle’s history and its current reconstruction after the earthquakes of 2016.


Tsuetate Onsen Information

English information page about Tsuetate Onsen, famed for its amazing displays of Carp flags flying over the river every spring.


Japan Michi No Eki Website

Michi No Eki are roadside stations selling fresh, local produce, specialities, souvenirs and more. Many will also have tourist information, sometimes restaurants and always toilets. If you are driving around Kyushu or anywhere in Japan this site will tell you where they are and what they offer.


Untapped Kumamoto

Untapped Kumamoto is a great blog that introduces many of the lesser known and off the beaten track spots in and around the Kumamoto area and the history behind them.


Fukuoka Now

A great multi lingual site with tons of information, interesting articles and up to date news of events happening in the Fukuoka area and around.


Kurokawa Onsen Association

Find out all about the Kurokawa Onsen area, how to get there, the many different hot springs and ryokans to choose from and book your accommodation too.


Kuju Flower Park

The Kuju Flower Park website is only in Japanese but if you scroll down the page you will find a link to the English information pamphlet.
