Cosmos コスモス Flower Viewing
When you think of autumn in Japan the image that first comes to mind is probably bright red maple leaves not a sea of pink and white flowers. But for many Japanese the cheerful blooms of the Cosmos flower are one of the country’s most typical autumnal scenes. The Japanese love Cosmos so much they have nicknamed it ’akizakura’ autumn cherry blossom. Huge displays of Cosmos are planted and going Cosmos viewing in autumn is a typical seasonal activity. The tall swaying blooms of many shades of pink brighten up even the dullest autumnn day.
Where to go Cosmos viewing in Kumamoto
Early October is probably the best season to enjoy Cosmos viewing in the Aso region. In the village of Teno about 10 minutes drive from Aso Shrine there is a lovely Cosmos viewing spot along a riverside with beautiful views of the Aso mountains behind.
The spot is called Ogomorihana Park おごもり花公園
The site is free to visit, there isn’t a designated parking area but locals seem to just pull in near one of the bridges, just make sure to leave space for other cars to pass. The Cosmos are planted on both sides of the river between two small bridges. You can stroll from one end to the other in 1o to 15 minutes.
Unfortunately you can’t get there by public transport, however, if you are coming to Aso by train you could rent a bicycle from Aso Station and be there in less than half an hour. The nearby village of Teno is also worth exploring as is the Kokuzo shrine, one of the oldest shrines in the Aso caldera.
If the timing is right Cosmos flower viewing can be added into an Around Aso tour with Explore Kumamoto, contact us to find out more.
