Daikanbo Viewpoint
The name given to the prime viewpoint of Aso, from here dramatic 360 degree views reveal the panoramic expanse of the whole caldera and the rolling grasslands behind.
On a clear day this point gives you the best views of ‘Nehanzo’, the sleeping buddha, its silhouette formed by the central 5 peaks of Mount Aso. If the conditions are right you may see the buddha floating above a sea of cloud.
Where is Daikanbo?
Daikanbo is situated on the northern edge of the caldera wall on the highest of Aso’s seven noses. The name of nose or ‘hana’ in Japanese is given to the promontories which jut out in to the caldera basin from the caldera wall. Daikanbo’s original name is ‘Toumigahana’ literally the ‘See far nose’, apt as for centuries it was used by the ancient Aso clan as a strategic view point.
Nowadays it’s a very popular stop off for sightseers, on sunny days you may also see hangliders, paragliders or model plane enthusiasts launching off from here.
