Kuju Mountains
The Kuju mountains are located in the north of the Aso Kuju National Park. Nicknamed the ‘rooftop of Kyushu’ the volcanic peaks reach heights of over 1700m. They also form the boundary between Kumamoto and Oita prefectures. Kuju is a popular hiking area and like Aso has an active volcano, Mt Io (Sulphur Mountain). Kuju like Aso also has beautiful grasslands and Alpine landscapes.
Kuju Flower Park
The Kuju Flower Park, or Kuju Hana Kouen くじゅう花公園, offers seasonal displays of over 3 million flowers in 500 different varieties from spring to late autumn. The park covers 49 acres of the beautiful Kuju plateau, the Kuju mountain range and Mt Aso making a stunning alpine back drop
Kokonoe Yume Suspension Bridge
The Kokonoe ‘Yume’ Otsurihashi 九重夢大吊橋 is Japan’s largest pedestrian suspension bridge.
The bridge offers marvellous views of one of Japan’s top 100 waterfalls. The graceful span hangs above the deep Kyusui ravine at a height of 173 m above the river valley floor. With a length of 390 m and an altitude of 777 m, this is a bridge to remember. Set on the edge of the magnificent Kuju Mountain range on a clear day you will also be rewarded with views across to the gently smoking active volcano.
There are three waterfalls to view collectively known as the Shindo Falls, they comprise the ‘child’ falls, Ko-daki, the ‘female’ falls, Me-daki and the ‘male’ falls, O-daki, the male falls is the most dramatic falling over 88 m and renowned as one of Japan’s top 100 falls.
Chojabaru Plateau
The Chojabaru plateau is a lovely stopping off point on the Yamanami Highway midway between Aso and Yufuin in the midst of the Kuju mountains. Famed for the Tadawara Marsh, a Ramsar designated wetland of international importance which is situated on the north west side of the Kuju mountain range. The marshland offers views of Mt Io, an active volcano which last erupted in the 1990’s and the three domed Mt. Mimata both of which have hiking courses starting from Chojabaru.
The Tadawara Marsh is a basin shaped wetland formed by the volcanic activity from the last glacial period of about 15,000 years ago to around 6,500 years ago. Grit carried by the Shiramizu river running through the marsh and marsh sediments created an intermediate moor. The wetlands were created through rainfall collecting in the basin and underground springs creating a special environment for a variety of plants and wildlife. In order to maintain the vegetation and to prevent the forest from spreading, the local people conduct a controlled burning in the meadow every spring.
Daikanbo Viewpoint
Daikanbo; the highest point on the northern caldera edge with the best panoramic views of the Aso caldera. From the caldera rim you can see the valleys below and the smoking Nakadake volcano in the distance. You may even get to see the ‘Unkai – Sea of Cloud’ when the caldera fills with cloud and the mountains appear to float above it. There is also a shop offering local specialities, souvenirs and refreshments.

EXCELLENT Based on 62 reviews Posted on MattDecember 19, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had an amazing time with Explore Kumamoto on the Mt. Aso and Takachiho Gorge tour! Helen was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and made the whole day feel easy and fun from start to finish. The pacing was perfect, the scenery was absolutely stunning, and Helen’s local insights really added to the experience. Everything was well organized, and it felt more like traveling with a local friend than being on a tour. This was, without a doubt, the highlight of our trip to Kumamoto. We're already talking about booking another tour with her on our next visit to Kumamoto. Thanks Helen!Posted on SimonDecember 19, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. It is one thing to visit the One Piece statues, but it takes a local to understand and explain the significance of each statue to their location as well as the impact of the Kumamoto 2016 earthquake. I highly recommend having Helen be the one to guide you through this journey as well. I hope to go back one day to try her other tours in the Kumamoto area.Posted on MDecember 18, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Einfach eine unvergessliche Tour zum Mt. Aso und Takachiho Gorge. Helen hat uns die wunderschönen Seiten Kyushus gezeigt, ist super gefahren und einfach eine tolle Person. Ich kann diese Tour 1000 % empfehlen und würde gerne wieder kommen :)Posted on StevenDecember 11, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Helen was great! She was really nice. She is really knowledgeable on the one piece tour. 5/5 would recommend to friends and family.Posted on RussellNovember 16, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Wow, what a tour – Explore Kumamoto - Samurai swords Tour Helen provided a relaxed and informative insight into the history and culture of the Kumamoto region and Musashi Miyamoto. So many interesting insights to places, culture, traditions that only a guide with deep local knowledge could share. The visit to the sacred Reigando Cave is a highlight for anyone interested in Japan’s history & martial arts. Time with Sensei Masanaga & his assistant provided a unique insight into the history & technique of forging a sword. Then a display of sword cutting techniques & mastery which was amazing to watch. Helen is extremely knowledgeable, friendly & adaptable, we highly recommend her tours. A 5 star tour and experience.Posted on SNovember 16, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Helen was AWESOME! I had a 2.5 week journey around Kyushu, and my time in Kumamoto was definitely a highlight because of Helen. I did two tours with her. She's from the UK, but has lived in Japan for a long time. As a result, she's both very knowledgeable and also super easy to communicate with given she's a native English speaker. I loved the stories and tidbits she told along the way-- it made each location feel very special and intimate. I also liked that the tours are small and in a smaller van instead of a huge tour bus, because she can re-arrange on the spot due to weather and pull over on the roads when good photo opportunities present themselves. I also just loved her personality - she is the type of person who is meant to socialize and teach people, she has the perfect demeanor for it. If I ever go back to Kumamoto, I'll definitely be doing another tour with her. Thanks Helen! Hope we cross paths again.Posted on DiegoNovember 15, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Really nice experience with Helen around Kumamoto. She has been living long time so Helen is sharing many deep stories about the region and one piece statues. Truly recommend this tour!Posted on RominaNovember 9, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Update November 2025: As we said, we came back. Did another One Piece Statue Tour and the Takachiho Gorge & Aso Tour. Even while we did the One Piece Tour for the second time, it was as amazing as the first time! Helen had lot's of informations about the Statues and Oda's life in Kumamoto. And no one can possible get enough of the landscape ❤️ To be honest, I could do the tour as many times as possible! (I'm pretty sure, I'll book another tour, if I'll ever come back to Japan again) ❤️ And for the Takachiho Gorge & Aso Tour - it was freaking incredible! Helen told us, we already did see a lot of Aso the day before while we did the One Piece Tour. So she asked, if we wanted to change the route a little, so she could show us something different. We agreed and saw many beautiful places! And it was amazing! Helen really knows every legend about every spot she showed us. Teached us, how to pray at the shrines, helped us with ordering food and we really could ask her anything about japan or japanese people. It's really like visiting a good friend - you'll definitely have a great time! ~*~ April 2024 Helen was such an amazing tour guide!! The One Piece Statue tour was one of my favourite activities I've done in all my three visits in Japan. Helen has so much knowledge about the prefecture - it was a pleasure to be able to listen to her talk. When we'll be visiting Japan again, we'll for sure book another tour with her!Posted on JoseeNovember 2, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. HELEN IS A DREAM! If you are even thinking of booking the One Piece statue tour - DO IT! Not only was it super convenient to be driven to all the locations, Helen, the tour guide, is a wealth of knowledge and it will not only enrich your tour of the statues, but of Kumamoto and Japan itself. I learned so much and had such a great time! It was honestly easily one of my absolute favorite part of my whole trip!Posted on GallenOctober 31, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had 2 very enjoyable tours with Helen to Takachiho Gorge and Mt Aso/Kurokawa Onsen along with a few other participants from from Australia/USA. Helen is very knowledgeable and chatty. She will relate to you stories about the various attractions so you have a much better understanding about their history/background. I loved Helen's tours as we had time to explore the various places in depth at a leisurely pace and there was sufficient time to enjoy an onsen! This compares favourably with other day tours by the larger platform operators which have such a hectic schedule trying to cover several places within a short space of time.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
