09:00 Meet up with your guide in front of Higo Ozu Station (you can take the 08:15 train from Kumamoto City to Higo Ozu station)
We take a scenic 45 minute drive along the Milk Road around the edge of the Aso caldera up to Daikanbo, the highest point on the northern caldera rim.
09:40 Daikanbo Viewpoint – Take a relaxing walk to the tip of this peninsula which sticks out of the caldera edge. Daikanbo is the highest point on the northern caldera edge and from here you can see panoramic views of the Aso caldera below, the caldera rim and smoking volcano of Mount Aso in the distance and if you are very, very lucky you may even get to see the ‘Unkai – Sea of Cloud’ when the caldera fills with cloud and the mountains appear to float above it.
10:40 Kurokawa Onsen Village Enjoy an introductory stroll around the village with your guide who will point out some of the different hot springs and speciality shops and tell you about Kurokawa’s interesting origins.
Your guide will give you an information leaflet about the different baths in the car so you can choose a hot spring you would like to visit, some of the baths are outside the village and your guide will be happy to drive you and pick you up after. If you are not sure where to go your guide will be happy to advise you. There are also foot baths if you prefer, if you don’t want a bath that’s fine too.
Free time to look around take an onsen or foot bath, and then have lunch either in the village or a nearby restaurant
13:45 Head to Mount Aso, on the way we make a quick stop at an intriguing local spot.
14:30 On the way to the top of Mount Aso we will stop for scenic views of the mountain and caldera scenery, say hello to some of cows and horses grazing the mountain side and take a look at Komezuka – the rice bowl hill; a perfectly formed mini volcano only a couple of thousand years old.
15:15 We head to the Nakadake Crater – Mount Aso’s active volcano, just a couple of km drive from Kusasenri- if the active volcano is at Level 1 and the crater area is open* you will be able to look into the active volcano’s craters and walk around the crater area and the Sunasenri plateau – a surreal lunar landscape made of volcanic ash and rocks deposited by the volcano.
*If the crater area is closed we will have more time to enjoy Kusasenri.
16:00 On top of Mount Aso there is a vast plateau called Kusasenri – this is the remains of a kilometer wide volcanic crater active 27,000 years ago. Nowadays it’s a beautiful grassland surrounded by volcanic peaks offering impressive views of the active volcano. Here you have free time to explore; take a walk around the different viewing platforms, visit the Mount Aso visitor center or Aso Volcano Museum. Visit a cafe, try an Aso gelato or do a little souvenir shopping. From spring to late autumn horse riding is also possible. Around 16:30 the horses finish work for the day and you can see them roaming free around the grasslands.

17:30 Arrive back at Higo Ozu Station
Trains back to Kumamoto City run approximately every 20 minutes
Depending on the weather forecast the itinerary may take place the opposite way round to ensure we can get the best views possible at Mount Aso.

Kurokawa Onsen and Mt Aso tour background:
Kurokawa Onsen is a charmingly traditional village nestled in a wooded valley at the base of the Kuju Mountain range, it’s home to over 25 exclusive hot spring ryokan hotels each offering ‘lotenburo’ – outdoor hotsprings for their guests or day visitors.
There is a great range of baths with different settings, features, views and sizes to choose from. The hot spring baths also vary with the mineral content of the waters, some are said to be beautifying and moisturising, while others are beneficial for a range of ailments from arthritis, to skin conditions, insomnia and anaemia, all are very relaxing!
Baths are usually single sex but there are mixed sex options and reasonably priced private baths are available as well.
The village is beautiful in every season as the hotspring owners work hard to create a very relaxing natural environment and it’s a lovely place to explore with small shops and cafes, seasonal foliage and flowers.
Mount Aso is Japan’s largest active volcano; a mountain range reaching heights of 1592m in the centre of one of Japan’s biggest caldera. The Aso area is a Unesco global Geo park and one of the country’s biggest and most beautiful grassland areas providing grazing for cattle and horses. The caldera is over 100 km around the edge and views from the edge of the caldera rim looking onto Mount Aso are breathtaking. The Nakadake volcano in the centre of Mount Aso is the only active volcano in Japan that you can visit up close and when conditions are safe look right inside the active crater.
The Aso region is definitely one of the ‘must see’ sights if you are visiting Japan’s southern island of Kyushu. Mount Aso is the largest inhabited volcanic caldera in the world and Japan’s largest active volcanic region. (When a volcanic crater is more than 2 km wide it is called a caldera, the Aso caldera is 25 km wide.) In the center of the caldera a chain of volcanic mountains runs east to west. In the center of these mountains is the Nakadake Volcano, currently Mount Aso’s only active volcano. It is Japan’s second most active volcano and a very rare one as when conditions are safe you can go right up to the edge of the crater. The volcano has been worshipped as a powerful shinto deity for thousands of years. Inside the crater you may be able to see a beautiful steaming turquoise lake.
Aso is also Japan’s largest grassland area making a unique and very beautiful landscape which changes every season. Japan is generally a land of forested mountains so the mountain grasslands of Aso offer views rarely found in the rest of the country. The lush susuki grass provides grazing for horses and the local Akaushi beef cattle. The grasslands are burnt every February and by late spring the new growth is a lush, vibrant green. By summer the grass has grown tall, silver seed heads form in the autumn and then turn golden over the winter. The grasslands also reveal the rollling contours of ancient pyroclastic flows deposited by volcanic activity over hundreds of thousands of years.
If you are interested in learning more about the Aso area take a look at the Aso section in Places to visit.

EXCELLENT Based on 62 reviews Posted on MattDecember 19, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had an amazing time with Explore Kumamoto on the Mt. Aso and Takachiho Gorge tour! Helen was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and made the whole day feel easy and fun from start to finish. The pacing was perfect, the scenery was absolutely stunning, and Helen’s local insights really added to the experience. Everything was well organized, and it felt more like traveling with a local friend than being on a tour. This was, without a doubt, the highlight of our trip to Kumamoto. We're already talking about booking another tour with her on our next visit to Kumamoto. Thanks Helen!Posted on SimonDecember 19, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. It is one thing to visit the One Piece statues, but it takes a local to understand and explain the significance of each statue to their location as well as the impact of the Kumamoto 2016 earthquake. I highly recommend having Helen be the one to guide you through this journey as well. I hope to go back one day to try her other tours in the Kumamoto area.Posted on MDecember 18, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Einfach eine unvergessliche Tour zum Mt. Aso und Takachiho Gorge. Helen hat uns die wunderschönen Seiten Kyushus gezeigt, ist super gefahren und einfach eine tolle Person. Ich kann diese Tour 1000 % empfehlen und würde gerne wieder kommen :)Posted on StevenDecember 11, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Helen was great! She was really nice. She is really knowledgeable on the one piece tour. 5/5 would recommend to friends and family.Posted on RussellNovember 16, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Wow, what a tour – Explore Kumamoto - Samurai swords Tour Helen provided a relaxed and informative insight into the history and culture of the Kumamoto region and Musashi Miyamoto. So many interesting insights to places, culture, traditions that only a guide with deep local knowledge could share. The visit to the sacred Reigando Cave is a highlight for anyone interested in Japan’s history & martial arts. Time with Sensei Masanaga & his assistant provided a unique insight into the history & technique of forging a sword. Then a display of sword cutting techniques & mastery which was amazing to watch. Helen is extremely knowledgeable, friendly & adaptable, we highly recommend her tours. A 5 star tour and experience.Posted on SNovember 16, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Helen was AWESOME! I had a 2.5 week journey around Kyushu, and my time in Kumamoto was definitely a highlight because of Helen. I did two tours with her. She's from the UK, but has lived in Japan for a long time. As a result, she's both very knowledgeable and also super easy to communicate with given she's a native English speaker. I loved the stories and tidbits she told along the way-- it made each location feel very special and intimate. I also liked that the tours are small and in a smaller van instead of a huge tour bus, because she can re-arrange on the spot due to weather and pull over on the roads when good photo opportunities present themselves. I also just loved her personality - she is the type of person who is meant to socialize and teach people, she has the perfect demeanor for it. If I ever go back to Kumamoto, I'll definitely be doing another tour with her. Thanks Helen! Hope we cross paths again.Posted on DiegoNovember 15, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Really nice experience with Helen around Kumamoto. She has been living long time so Helen is sharing many deep stories about the region and one piece statues. Truly recommend this tour!Posted on RominaNovember 9, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Update November 2025: As we said, we came back. Did another One Piece Statue Tour and the Takachiho Gorge & Aso Tour. Even while we did the One Piece Tour for the second time, it was as amazing as the first time! Helen had lot's of informations about the Statues and Oda's life in Kumamoto. And no one can possible get enough of the landscape ❤️ To be honest, I could do the tour as many times as possible! (I'm pretty sure, I'll book another tour, if I'll ever come back to Japan again) ❤️ And for the Takachiho Gorge & Aso Tour - it was freaking incredible! Helen told us, we already did see a lot of Aso the day before while we did the One Piece Tour. So she asked, if we wanted to change the route a little, so she could show us something different. We agreed and saw many beautiful places! And it was amazing! Helen really knows every legend about every spot she showed us. Teached us, how to pray at the shrines, helped us with ordering food and we really could ask her anything about japan or japanese people. It's really like visiting a good friend - you'll definitely have a great time! ~*~ April 2024 Helen was such an amazing tour guide!! The One Piece Statue tour was one of my favourite activities I've done in all my three visits in Japan. Helen has so much knowledge about the prefecture - it was a pleasure to be able to listen to her talk. When we'll be visiting Japan again, we'll for sure book another tour with her!Posted on JoseeNovember 2, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. HELEN IS A DREAM! If you are even thinking of booking the One Piece statue tour - DO IT! Not only was it super convenient to be driven to all the locations, Helen, the tour guide, is a wealth of knowledge and it will not only enrich your tour of the statues, but of Kumamoto and Japan itself. I learned so much and had such a great time! It was honestly easily one of my absolute favorite part of my whole trip!Posted on GallenOctober 31, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had 2 very enjoyable tours with Helen to Takachiho Gorge and Mt Aso/Kurokawa Onsen along with a few other participants from from Australia/USA. Helen is very knowledgeable and chatty. She will relate to you stories about the various attractions so you have a much better understanding about their history/background. I loved Helen's tours as we had time to explore the various places in depth at a leisurely pace and there was sufficient time to enjoy an onsen! This compares favourably with other day tours by the larger platform operators which have such a hectic schedule trying to cover several places within a short space of time.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust. Why take this tour?
Both Kurokawa Onsen and Mount Aso are on many people’s list of places to visit in Kyushu but getting to them by public transport is time consuming and getting around in the Aso area without a car is very limiting.
If you are interested in trying a Japanese onsen but are not comfortable with the idea of sharing a bath this tour is ideal, on weekdays we can usually find a private bath that is available.
If not everyone in your group wants to take a hotspring that’s fine, Kurokawa is a lovely place to stroll around.
If you have tattoos, you can buy tattoo covers at Kurokawa or opt to take a private bath
We visit Kurokawa Onsen in the morning which is the quietest time of day, so it is often possible to get a public bath all to yourself and there also is the option to rent a private bath for an hour.
Your guide will be happy to explain onsen etiquette to you and help you find the perfect bath.
Explore more by visiting Mt Aso and the Kurokawa region as two separate tours
