08:51 Meet up with your guide in front of Higo Ozu Station (you can take the 08:12 train from Kumamoto City to Higo Ozu)
09:00 Departing from Higo Ozu Station we journey through the remote Minami Aso region breaking the journey with a stop off at a local rodside station and viewpoint called Asobonosato Kugino. There you can take in the beautiful views of the southern Aso caldera and take a look at some of the region’s local specialities. In spring and autumn there are seasonal flower fields to enjoy.
10:50 We arrive in Takachiho and enjoy a relaxing guided walk through Takachiho gorge. Your guide will tell you about the features of the gorge and some of the ancient myths associated with it. The walk has some steps but the pace is slow with plenty of time for photographs. Take in the views and enjoy some of the many ancient Shinto myths connected to the Takachiho area.
11:45 Time for boating! Boats need pre-booking 14 days in advance; a boat costs 4100 Yen per boat from Tuesday to Thursday and 5100 Yen per person on other days and national holidays. The boating is for 30 minutes, up to 3 adults can ride in one boat or 2 adults and 2 pre-schoolers. On sunny mornings you can often see a rainbow in the waterfall that cascades into the gorge
From your boat you can view the amazing rock features, turquoise waters of the Gokase river and get as close (as you like!) to the beautiful Manai waterfall, an experience not to be missed. (The river is very calm, life jackets are provided and only very basic rowing skills are needed. The boat staff are always happy to show you how to row, I’m also happy to join as a rower if you’d like) If you would prefer not to row you will have extra free time to enjoy the gorge or go and get an early lunch.
12:40 Time for lunch and some free time. For lunch there are several restaurants to choose from in the gorge offering local specialities such as Miyazaki beef, grilled yamame fish and chicken nanban. There’s also a charming and unique restaurant specialising in Nagashi Soumen, a popular Japanese summer dish which originated in Takachiho and involves catching noodles that flow down a bamboo pipe. The fast flowing noodles are a challenge for your chopstick skills and a lot of fun to eat. There’s also a cafe, a couple of ice cream places and souvenir shops, plus a small aquarium and some fish to feed. There are also places to sit and eat outside if you want to bring something to eat.
13:45 After lunch, we take a 15 minute drive up to a peaceful and relaxing mountain viewpoint called Kunimigaoka which has the best views looking down at Takachiho town, the Sobo mountains and all the way to Aso – if visibility is bad that day we will pay a visit to Takachiho Shrine instead – The solemnly peaceful shrine with a history dating back over 1,900 years. The shrine is set in a wonderful grove of towering Japanese Cedar trees, the oldest said to be around 1000 years old. The most famous of the trees are the ‘Meoto Sugi’ said to be a male and a female tree growing side by side and married to each other. A popular ritual for couples or families is to walk around the trees clockwise three times, to ensure good fortune and happiness.
14:30 We then take a 15 minute drive out of Takachiho Town through some beautiful countryside to the tiny village of Iwato. This is the famed location for two caves associated with Japan’s most important Shinto kami; the sun goddess Amaterasu. to get to the cave we walk through the grounds of Amano Iwato Shrine which venerates one of these caves; it’s one of the most important sites in Japanese mythology, I will tell you the fascinating and funny legend of how the sun goddess became Japan’s most important goddess before we head to Amano Yasukawado cave
This sacred cavern is a mysterious place as over the years the custom has begun for visitors to carry stones to the site and arrange them in small piles as prayers that their wishes may be answered. Feel free to practise your stone balancing skillsand add to the immense array of stone piles in the cave.
15:30 Heading back we usually have some free time for an icecream or drink break near the shrine before heading back to Higo Ozu Station around 16:00.
17:30 Arrive back at Higo Ozu Station
Trains back to Kumamoto City run approximately every 20 minutes, you will usually be in time for the 17:31 or 17:44 departure.
If you are visiting in early to mid April and the sakura is in bloom we can also take the scenic route past the 1000 sakura in Takamori

Kumamoto is the nearest city to Takachiho which is just over the border in Miyazaki Prefecture, the romantic Takachiho Gorge winds its way through the sleepy mountain town of Takachiho. The gorge was formed from the pyroclastic flow of the Aso volcanos, when sudden cooling led to the formation of dramatic columnar rocks and sheer cliffs that rise above the river between 80 to 100 m high. At the base the blue green Gokase river runs, and sightseers row at a leisurely pace past the stunning Manai waterfall that falls over the gorge edge. The gorge is renowned as one of the most uniquely, beautiful scenic spots in Kyushu and was designated a National Scenic and Natural Monument in 1934. Takachiho also has a deep connection with the mythology of Japan, it is connected with the legend of Amaterasu the sun goddess and said to be the birthplace of the first Emperor of Japan.

EXCELLENT Based on 62 reviews Posted on MattDecember 19, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had an amazing time with Explore Kumamoto on the Mt. Aso and Takachiho Gorge tour! Helen was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and made the whole day feel easy and fun from start to finish. The pacing was perfect, the scenery was absolutely stunning, and Helen’s local insights really added to the experience. Everything was well organized, and it felt more like traveling with a local friend than being on a tour. This was, without a doubt, the highlight of our trip to Kumamoto. We're already talking about booking another tour with her on our next visit to Kumamoto. Thanks Helen!Posted on SimonDecember 19, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. It is one thing to visit the One Piece statues, but it takes a local to understand and explain the significance of each statue to their location as well as the impact of the Kumamoto 2016 earthquake. I highly recommend having Helen be the one to guide you through this journey as well. I hope to go back one day to try her other tours in the Kumamoto area.Posted on MDecember 18, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Einfach eine unvergessliche Tour zum Mt. Aso und Takachiho Gorge. Helen hat uns die wunderschönen Seiten Kyushus gezeigt, ist super gefahren und einfach eine tolle Person. Ich kann diese Tour 1000 % empfehlen und würde gerne wieder kommen :)Posted on StevenDecember 11, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Helen was great! She was really nice. She is really knowledgeable on the one piece tour. 5/5 would recommend to friends and family.Posted on RussellNovember 16, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Wow, what a tour – Explore Kumamoto - Samurai swords Tour Helen provided a relaxed and informative insight into the history and culture of the Kumamoto region and Musashi Miyamoto. So many interesting insights to places, culture, traditions that only a guide with deep local knowledge could share. The visit to the sacred Reigando Cave is a highlight for anyone interested in Japan’s history & martial arts. Time with Sensei Masanaga & his assistant provided a unique insight into the history & technique of forging a sword. Then a display of sword cutting techniques & mastery which was amazing to watch. Helen is extremely knowledgeable, friendly & adaptable, we highly recommend her tours. A 5 star tour and experience.Posted on SNovember 16, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Helen was AWESOME! I had a 2.5 week journey around Kyushu, and my time in Kumamoto was definitely a highlight because of Helen. I did two tours with her. She's from the UK, but has lived in Japan for a long time. As a result, she's both very knowledgeable and also super easy to communicate with given she's a native English speaker. I loved the stories and tidbits she told along the way-- it made each location feel very special and intimate. I also liked that the tours are small and in a smaller van instead of a huge tour bus, because she can re-arrange on the spot due to weather and pull over on the roads when good photo opportunities present themselves. I also just loved her personality - she is the type of person who is meant to socialize and teach people, she has the perfect demeanor for it. If I ever go back to Kumamoto, I'll definitely be doing another tour with her. Thanks Helen! Hope we cross paths again.Posted on DiegoNovember 15, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Really nice experience with Helen around Kumamoto. She has been living long time so Helen is sharing many deep stories about the region and one piece statues. Truly recommend this tour!Posted on RominaNovember 9, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Update November 2025: As we said, we came back. Did another One Piece Statue Tour and the Takachiho Gorge & Aso Tour. Even while we did the One Piece Tour for the second time, it was as amazing as the first time! Helen had lot's of informations about the Statues and Oda's life in Kumamoto. And no one can possible get enough of the landscape ❤️ To be honest, I could do the tour as many times as possible! (I'm pretty sure, I'll book another tour, if I'll ever come back to Japan again) ❤️ And for the Takachiho Gorge & Aso Tour - it was freaking incredible! Helen told us, we already did see a lot of Aso the day before while we did the One Piece Tour. So she asked, if we wanted to change the route a little, so she could show us something different. We agreed and saw many beautiful places! And it was amazing! Helen really knows every legend about every spot she showed us. Teached us, how to pray at the shrines, helped us with ordering food and we really could ask her anything about japan or japanese people. It's really like visiting a good friend - you'll definitely have a great time! ~*~ April 2024 Helen was such an amazing tour guide!! The One Piece Statue tour was one of my favourite activities I've done in all my three visits in Japan. Helen has so much knowledge about the prefecture - it was a pleasure to be able to listen to her talk. When we'll be visiting Japan again, we'll for sure book another tour with her!Posted on JoseeNovember 2, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. HELEN IS A DREAM! If you are even thinking of booking the One Piece statue tour - DO IT! Not only was it super convenient to be driven to all the locations, Helen, the tour guide, is a wealth of knowledge and it will not only enrich your tour of the statues, but of Kumamoto and Japan itself. I learned so much and had such a great time! It was honestly easily one of my absolute favorite part of my whole trip!Posted on GallenOctober 31, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had 2 very enjoyable tours with Helen to Takachiho Gorge and Mt Aso/Kurokawa Onsen along with a few other participants from from Australia/USA. Helen is very knowledgeable and chatty. She will relate to you stories about the various attractions so you have a much better understanding about their history/background. I loved Helen's tours as we had time to explore the various places in depth at a leisurely pace and there was sufficient time to enjoy an onsen! This compares favourably with other day tours by the larger platform operators which have such a hectic schedule trying to cover several places within a short space of time.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
